Jiu-jitsu class at Northbound

Confidence without aggression

Kids learn to stand taller, use their voice, respect partners, and stay calm when something feels uncomfortable.

Focus without yelling

Class gives kids a structured place to move, listen, take turns, and try again after mistakes.

Bully resistance without revenge

We teach posture, boundaries, getting help, and physical skills only when needed. This is not a class about looking for fights.

Your kids will be safe, welcomed and we’ll help them grow in confidence.

Before you choose a program, you need to see the room for yourself: how coaches talk to kids, how partners are matched, how safety is handled, and how your child feels afterward. That is what the trial is for.

We start with safety, not intensity.

New kids learn how to tap, care for a partner, move with control, and ask for help before anything gets harder.

  • Grouped by age, size, and experience
  • No child is pushed into hard sparring before they’re ready
  • Coaches supervise closely
  • Clean mats, clean uniforms, and cleaned loaner gear

Self-defense with self-control.

Kids jiu-jitsu is non-striking. We want your child to stand taller, stay calmer, and know what to do when something feels wrong, not become rough or reckless.

  • Confidence without aggression
  • Respect for training partners
  • Problem-solving under pressure
  • Competition is available, never required

No gear or commitment needed for the trial.

We’ll lend your child a clean trial gi, or they can bring their own if they already have one. Afterward, we’ll explain schedule, membership, uniforms, and sibling options clearly. If your child is still unsure, a second trial class is welcome.

  • No uniform purchase before the trial
  • Parents can watch any class
  • Membership options are explained after
  • Sibling or family questions are welcome

Parent questions before the first class.

Is jiu-jitsu safe for kids?

Yes. There is always some risk in a physical activity. But we aim to keep all of our kids members safe and reduce that risk by starting gradually, teaching tapping and partner care early, and keeping beginners closely supervised. Some light knocks and bumps can happen, but everyone goes home safe.

Will my child get hurt?

No the chances of your child getting hurt are very low because we really don’t teach kids to train tough and rough. Kids are matched thoughtfully, coached closely, and introduced to movement in a controlled way. Some kids can get a little scared initially if they’re not used to rough and tumble, but most adjust quick to the games we play.

Does jiu-jitsu teach kids to fight?

Jiu jitsu is a martial art that helps them in a fight. But we teach control, boundaries, calm problem-solving, and self-defense as a last resort. There is no punching or kicking in our kids jiu-jitsu classes.

Can my child try it if they’re shy or nervous?

Yes. They can watch, pause, ask questions, and join at their own pace. Parents are welcome to watch any class from the sidelines to observe. If your child is shy and nervous the first time they attend and they don’t fully participate, you are welcome to come back and try another time. We want your child to try it properly before you decide.

What age can kids start?

We have kids as young as 3, but most start at 4-5. Send the trial request and we’ll confirm the right starting class for your child’s age, size, and comfort level.

What should my child wear?

We will lend you a trial jiu jitsu uniform (called a gi – pronounced “gee”). Bring comfortable athletic clothes they can wear underneath. A fitted t-shirt is fine.

Does my child need a gi?

Not for your trial. You don’t need to buy anything before the trial. We can lend a cleaned trial gi if your child needs one. If they want to train long-term they will need one, as it’s necessary for training.

Can parents watch?

Yes. Parents are welcome to watch from the sidelines and ask questions after. We just ask that you don’t coach or call out to your child while we’re training them, as it causes confusion. In our room, you will be right where they can see you though, and you can see them.

Are new kids mixed with advanced kids?

Coaches match students thoughtfully by age, size, experience, and comfort level.

How do you choose training partners?

We look at age, size, experience, confidence, and comfort level. The goal is a partner who helps your child learn safely.

Will my child have to spar or compete?

No. Competition is optional, and no child is pushed into hard sparring before they’re ready.

Is this good for bullying?

We teach our kids to be bully-proof. The goal is not to turn them into a fighter. Instead, the goal is calm confidence: posture, voice, boundaries, getting help, and physical skills only when needed.

Is this good for focus and discipline?

Yes, we have many young kids who come to jiu jitsu to help them with their focus. Our class gives kids a structured place to listen, wait their turn, follow instructions, move their body, and try again after mistakes. Many young kids with ADD (or similar) love jiu jitsu and find it super engaging and fun.

How much does it cost after the trial?

After the trial, we’ll walk you through membership options clearly before you choose. No pressure.

Are there contracts or surprise fees?

Nope. We’ll explain membership, uniform needs, and costs before enrollment so you know exactly what you’re choosing. No long term commitments unless you want to.

Do you offer sibling options?

Ask in the trial request and we’ll explain the current family options clearly before you choose.

How clean are the mats and uniforms?

Mats are cleaned regularly, students train in clean gear, and loaner gis are cleaned after use.

What happens after the trial class?

We check in with you, answer questions, and recommend the right next class only if it feels like a fit.
